Geographical Indications for Craft and Industrial Products

A unique system of protection for geographical indications for craft and industrial products entered into force in the European Union on 1 December 2025. This system makes it possible to protect products such as glassware, ceramics or textiles when local know-how or regional traditions give them a specific identity and value.

In order for the name of a craft or industrial product to qualify for protection as a geographical indication, the product shall comply with the following requirements:

1.       the product originates in a specific place, region or country;

2.       the product’s given quality, reputation or other characteristic is essentially attributable to its geographical origin; and

3.       at least one of the production steps of the product takes place in the defined geographical area.

The new system for craft and industrial products complements the existing framework of geographical indications for agricultural products, foodstuffs, wines and spirits. In this context, it helps to strengthen coherence between the different protection regimes within the European Union and to ensure harmonized legal protection for all geographical indications, regardless of the category of products concerned.

For more information on the regime of geographical indications for agricultural products, foodstuffs, wines and spirits, you may contact the Administration des services techniques de l’agriculture (ASTA).

Why register a geographical indication for a craft or industrial product?

The registration of a geographical indication grants collective rights to producers or artisans. Only those who comply with the specification of the geographical indication are entitled to use it.

This protection prevents the misleading or abusive use of the name by third parties and guarantees consumers the authenticity and quality of the product.

How to get protection?

Within the European Union, the protection of geographical indications for craft and industrial products is governed by Regulation (EU) 2023/2411.

Luxembourg has obtained a derogation from the obligation to process applications at national level. Therefore, any application for the registration of a Luxembourg geographical indication must be transmitted directly to the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).
